Issue 21: The gift of community that keeps on giving (and it's not even the holidays)

Hey Get Free Fam - welcome to Issue 21! In the spirit of celebrating our wins (as we talked about in Issue 15 ) it feels important to mark this milestone. If you were here last week, youāll know there was a plan for a Fam Mail edition full of your thoughts and comments over the past few issues. But life was life-ing and airport WiFi aināt always the best, so weāre celebrating The Get Free Guide being eligible for an adult beverage instead (OK, 21 issues, not 21 years, but again, celebrate where you can!)

More than 200 of you from many corners of the world have joined the community since the launch in June, and we continue to grow. THANK YOU for taking time to read, share the ways youāre getting free and help other GFFs with their questions. It means so much, and weāre just getting started!
š«HELP THE GET FREE GUIDE, WIN YOURSELF SOME SWAGš«
I LOVE that youāre rolling with The Get Free Guide! Of course nothing is perfect and getting your input to make it better would be a huge help.
This survey will take FIVE minutes max to do, and everyone who completes it (complete with a name and email so I can contact you!) before Monday November 10 will be added to the Get Free Thank You Hat to win one of five original Get Free tote bags! Help us create the future of Get Free. Thank you!

Letās get into it!
So: since our last FAM Mail issue back in August weāve covered all kinds of topics: Why itās important to cut yourself some slack, how you can find the power in your story and why itās OK to try again when things donāt quite go to plan. But three issues in particular got yāall talking.
Conversation #1: Weight Aināt Nothing But a Number
From a brunch gathering in Ghana to family dinner tables in the US and beyond, Weight Aināt Nothing But A Number really got under the skin. The many (many, many, many) numbers attached to our bodies - height, weight, BMI, A1C, blood pressure to name a few - all create tension when it comes to getting free. GFF Sylvie reached out and started out with this:
The scale has never been a friend, especially in these mid-life years⦠I swear the numbers Do Not Budge š even after months of regular workouts and healthy meals. Iām always tempted to say āF itā but I wonāt in hopes that my future self will thank me for putting in the work now.
Gym memberships are fueled by all of us trying to take care of our future selves. Just be sure youāre doing more than making a monthly donation. I said what I said.
But itās not just adults who can feel trapped by our body metrics: kids can, too. For GFF Sylvie, living in a country where most young women are thin is a real challenge for her daughter:
Iām going to share this guide with her. Sheās always been a big girl and living [among] teen girls who are stick figures, I know itās tough for her. We canāt even find her bra size in stores out here which contributes to those shame feelings. Her dad and I say similar things you shared ā her weight, shape and size have nothing to do with her intelligence or her spirit⦠and that genetics play a huge role.
If youāre a parent or have young folks in your life, how are you navigating conversations about all the numbers that come with taking care of our bodies? Or how did you deal with it as a kid and what advice can you share with GFF Sylvie? Email [email protected].

A few of you reached out with stories about interactions with doctors and fears around not being heard. GFF Debbie said:
I can relate to distrusting the medical system, especially after my momās battle with cancer many years ago. Have been on my own health journey, too. Now needing a new lineup of doctors after moving states - after Iād found some Black women doctors I valued. Itās a continuous journey.
And staying with doctors, a number of messages came in with various takes on managing relationships with health care providers. Everything from meticulous journaling to prove to doctors that food and exercise routines are balanced and consistent, to the use of home blood pressure monitors, glucose readers, and sleep trackers to measure every metric possible.
GFF Natalie wrote that she measures ALL numbers and has made some changes to her exercise, nutrition and vitamin regimen as a result. But, thereās one number she says none of us can get away from:
The actual result of all this number bashing? I am actually pretty healthy! So why do I regularly feel so rubbish if my numbers are good? It has to be The Big Bad number. Age. I canāt stop time so my age number is only going to go up. Age is just a number? It is not. It is made up of multiple numbers, some low, some high, some in the middle but they all have an impact.
So hereās another conversation spark: how is age showing up in your get free journey? Are there things youāre choosing not to do, or doing differently because of your age (whether older OR younger?) Aaliyah said Age Aināt Nothing But a Number, but howās that working out for you? Email [email protected] or just hit reply to this email!
Clearly thereās much to discuss here. Iāll have details about a Get Free event on Friday December 5 - Your Body, Your Numbers - where weāll really dig into this topic. RSVPs open next week. More soon!
Conversation #2: Time Is All We Have
This issue was written while spending time with my dad as he turned 86. Heās fit and healthy, but perhaps for the first time it really dawned on me that he wonāt be here forever. I know that sounds ridiculous, but itās true. Ultimately, none of us will be here for eternity, and time - today - is really all we have.
A few of you wrote in about how youāre reclaiming your precious seconds, minutes and hours, especially when it comes to work. GFF Kirsty shared:
This post just resonated so much with me. I took on a new role at work three years ago. I lost my evenings, weekends, holidays and myself...and for what?? So two weeks ago I handed in my notice after 23 years with the company with no job lined up. The relief I feel is unbelievable. I'm going to save this post to remind me that 'time is all we have'.
And similarly GFF Elise wrote about leaving her role because it was no longer a fit for her time or her values:
I gave the organization so many years. Leadership has changed and so has the approach to how people are treated. This shift just doesnāt align with my values and I had to ask āwhy am I here?ā Of course we all need money to live, but not at the cost of my values and integrity. Thatās all we have, right?
This conversation around work also played into our chat about layoffs and how they are not your fault (Issue 17). A number of you wrote in expressing relief at being reminded that you are not to blame for your role being eliminated or for telling people they no longer have a job. As one GFFer wrote: āThank you for the reminder that I did nothing wrong and I am employable. My confidence took a knock after being laid off and I wondered for a long time if I was let go because I wasnāt good at my job. I needed these words to give me a boost.ā

Conversation #3: The Chokehold of Scarcity
A recent issue, but one that struck a cord. With layoffs and socioeconomic struggles in so many places, it makes sense that scarcity is top of mind. A few of you shared how side hustles are becoming more urgent and taking more time because of fears that the 9-5 will soon be gone. The feeling of abundance isnāt there. But GFF Paulina shared how Issue 19 and some conversations with her spouse made her think differently about a recent side hustle opportunity:
It started to feel like the side hustles are actually me selling myself short. Itās like Iām telling the universe that thatās all Iām worth, while lamenting that I want better leadership roles. Like Iām focusing on the wrong thing. My spouse has been telling me this for years but this time it came from within. After reading your newsletter, I wrote to the person [the side hustle opportunity] and confirmed - āthank you, no thank you!!!ā itās like I thought about the space in my brain and heart as a valuable (not necessarily limited) resource - and decided to put it to something better. Money comes and goes. My own contributions to the world are more important.
And the last submission Iād like to share took us to church - literally! The Chokehold of Scarcity was posted on October 10 - 1010 and I mentioned that:
Looking at 10.10 today - or any matching number sequence - to me feels like a nod and a wink from the universe, a sign that weāre on the right path and that - in time - order returns to everything. Even a broken clock is right twice a day!
GFF Kim sent this message by return:
The first thing that popped in my head as I read 10 10 is the following scripture. āThe thiefās purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.ā (John 10:10)
The enemy of our soul would like to place and keep us in a chokeholdāthat is his purpose. However, we have a higher purpose to not just live but to live life in ABUNDANCE; not only to survive but to THRIVE; not to settle but to be SATISFIED to the OVERFLOW
Getting free shows up in so many ways and places. Thank ALL of you for taking the time to reach out and share. I could write a VERY long post with all of the messages and questions and wisdom - yāall have a lot to say! Weāll do another edition of FAM Mail next year
In the meantime, please keep your questions, comments and advice coming in. What are you trying to get free FROM? Or what are you getting free to DO? Email [email protected] or press the button below and weāll be in touch. Donāt be shy!
