đź’ŤGet Free: You Are Worth the Commitment

Issue 25: Don’t wait to be chosen. Choose yourself!

Hey, Get Free Fam! Happy Friday. Coming to you live from a very wet and soggy Southern California. It honestly feels like Noah’s Ark might roll down the street at any moment because there is just so much rain. And you know — on one hand, we need the rain. On the other hand, it’s giving “I’m staying in the house with a book and some tea” vibes.

If you have to go out, I hope your raincoat is close by, your feet stay dry, and you get to enjoy these cooler temperatures. I will say, though — especially in LA — drivers lose their minds when they see even a little bit of water falling from the sky, and decide that this is the time to drive at a million miles an hour. Stay safe out there (and slow down!)

HELLO, HI!

As always, welcome to all of our new subscribers. Take a moment to check out the archive — The Get Free Guide is a space for taking action on our daily freedoms as we work toward our bigger goals. It’s great to have you here! Drop us a note at [email protected] and let us know what you’re trying to get free from, or the freedoms you’re trying to build. We don’t gatekeep here, and we love supporting one another.

SO, HOW ARE WE GETTING FREE THIS WEEK?

The rain is partly responsible for this week’s Get Free action: keeping your commitment to yourself. After a little break I headed back to the gym this week. I got up at dark thirty on Tuesday morning and hit the weights. Great! After a late night of celebrating on Tuesday, then another night of talking about podcasts at a work event on Wednesday, I was smart enough to book my Thursday gym session for the evening. Big brain over here. Except: you see the rain I mentioned up top? I was NOT trying to be outside and wasn’t convinced I’d make it to a session at 7pm. The house was warm, the dinner I’d made smelled really good  â€” it was a night for the house! But I remembered the little sign at my gym that says: Just Show Up. Dang it. I had to go, even if it meant dragging my ass all the way there.

This is the sign you can see from pretty much anywhere in the gym - it works!

When I arrived the gym was PACKED with people who a) braved the rain, b) just showed up, but c) committed to themselves and put their goals first, rain or no rain. It was a great session, we all sweated, groaned as necessary and then shuffled home (still raining!) after 60 mins of taking care of ourselves. Shout out to Aion Training in Pasadena for that sign that got me out the house! My abs thank you :)

The power of commitment has been very present this week (OK, OK, I can take a hint!) So, I mentioned I was out in these streets on Tuesday evening, too. It was for the Spirit of the Entrepreneur awards held at the Riverside Convention Center. My dear friend and owner of the Oak Tree Learning Center, Jennifer Carter was a finalist in recognition of the incredible work she does in early education and her innovative approach to engaging young minds and supporting parents. Over the last eight years she’s built Oak Tree from one school to three and more on the way. She is COMMITTED to her purpose and it shows. She’s not doing this for award recognition, this is just what she does.

It’s not often we see our friends on giant screens!

Now to be clear, my friend is very special, but here’s the thing: the award ceremony was a room full of Jennifers â€” over 800 people, wall-to-wall sequins and sparkles — all celebrating the same thing: commitment. Every finalist, every award winner at some point had an idea, took action, found support and stayed committed. Whether it was their purpose or calling in life, a need they saw to be filled, or a unique skillset they wanted to share, every finalist had the same story: something in them said, you have to do this, and they did.

Footnote to this: the tagline for the event was Bold By Design. Much like my gym’s call to “Just Show Up”, when you’re bold by design, anything is possible. Even if you have to fake the bold, you’re being intentional and committed in your steps. How can things NOT happen when you move in this way?

HOW ARE WE GETTING FREE IN COMMITMENT?

1. Identify your goal and why it matters.

What is the thing you’re committing to?
Why is it a priority?
What needs to be in place to help you keep that commitment?

2. Make it plain.

Sometimes you need a physical reminder. When people get engaged, they wear a ring —literally a symbol of commitment. What’s your symbol?

For example, I have a giant postcard I made for The Get Free Guide sitting on my bookshelf. It’s bright yellow, so hard to miss. I see it every morning, and it reminds me of the commitment I’ve made not just to this newsletter and this community, but to my own daily freedoms. On the days I don’t feel like showing up, this visual anchor keeps me grounded in the why.

3. Just show up.

Borrowed straight from my gym. Commitment often requires discipline, and on the days you don’t feel like doing the thing, the very least you can do is show up for yourself. And once you show up, you’ll usually take the next step.

4. Don’t do it alone.

I could have done my whole Get Free process privately in a journal. But by sharing it, a community formed. There’s accountability, encouragement, and connection. Bringing people in can keep you going when your own motivation dips and fuel new ways of thinking and ideas.

5. Revisit your own archives.

We've all had moments when we committed to something — a project, a creative work, a physical challenge — and followed through. What helped you then? What actions did you take? How did it feel? Those answers are clues you can use again.

6. Give yourself grace.

Nothing happens overnight. Life isn’t perfect, and neither are we. If you fall off, get back on. One step in front of the other. Commitment is a journey, not a moment.

These are the actions I plan to put front and center this week: how we commit to ourselves is connected to the freedoms that will follow. How are you making commitments to yourself? How are you choosing to be bold by design? How are you just showing up?

🚀Get Your Life: Things to read, listen to, enjoy🚀

📚What I’m reading: I love memoir and just cracked open Successful Failure: Lessons Learned Flat on my Face by comedian Kevin Fredericks (otherwise known as Kev On Stage.) Talk about commitment and not giving up! Support local bookstores if you decide to purchase a copy. My favorite is Octavia’s Bookshelf in Pasadena, CA

🎧What’s on the pod: I’ve recommended before, but it just never misses. If you’re an entrepreneur or just thinking about life differently, it’s a really solid show. Check out this episode with Tracee Ellis Ross. Yes, she’s talking business, but she’s also talking lessons for life.

📺What I’m watching: We all need a good laugh, and this YouTube short series, Investigator, Investigator is just the right mix of random and ridiculous - and less than three minutes!

🎵 Soundtrack for the week: This one popped up in my feed recently - Be Thankful for What You’ve Got with Omar and Angie Stone (RIP) a soulful remix of the William DeVaughn classic.

✨ What are you reading, watching or listening to that’s helping you get free? Send your recommendations for an end of year list! Email [email protected] and add “2025 Recs” in the subject line!✨
